36 Views of My Breasts: A trans body memoir - Wilhelmina "Billie" Sainwood

$15.00

With enough belief and daily prayer,
there will always be miracles
and new ways

to hurt.
‍ ‍ - ‘Running down stairs, three months on HRT’

So much of aging is fighting and failing, fighting and relenting, the truths of our selves that we’ve always known. From opening salvo (“I am breathing as I write this. My chest is expanding and contracting until my nipples press the soft fabric of my sports bra then disappear. My breasts are filling with stubborn proof of my life. I am heavy. I am light.“) to the closing lines of her final poem (“eyes / lichen / kiss from a sword”), Sainwood invites us to stand together in communion with the flesh that has carried and carries, to trust in our own bodies, and to hold them in wonder as we watch them grow. We are witness here to trans reclaimation; to breast adoration. In this adaptation of Sainwood’s one woman show of the same name, we, the breasted & the unbreasted are all equally welcome. No two breasts are identical, no two relationships with them the same. In delving so deeply into her own, Sainwood offers a lens for reflection and a framework for reimagining our bodies as patient creations who’ll welcome us back.

Additonal Praise for 36 Views of My Breasts: A trans body memoir

Billie Sainwood writes the kind of work that burrows under your skin and finds a home among all your other most cherished, precious thoughts, you know? 36 Views is a book I have not been able to stop thinking about. Billie's writing is funny, vulnerable, and breathtaking in its vastness. Did you know your body could be so much? Did you know your trans body is art? Billie knows, and what a joy she would share it with us.”

-Daniel Herd, Host of Write Clube ATL

“36 Views of My Breasts is a true longitudinal study, in that each poem is its own remembrance of the flesh of chests past and reverence of tits present. Using repetition as an act of meaningful accumulation, Sainwood builds resonance through rituals of self-demolition and reconstruction, sweetened by remembering every awkward, dissonant, sexy, nurturing, discoverable iteration of self. Deftly and tenderly, Sainwood reminds us that we’re always naked under our clothes—then guides us to embrace the parts of ourselves that can only face forward alongside us.”

- Stephanie Anderson, SOMEONE ELSE’S FEELINGS)

“Through a raw and luminous lens, Billie Sainwood pieces together the trans experience through a series of sharp, intimate stories that never shy away from the mess of becoming. With language that’s both visceral and tender, Sainwood writes through the body; its aches, transformations, and small triumphs, to reveal how identity is felt as much as it’s understood.”

- Bobbi Twiggs, The Pros and Cons of Killing Your Cult Leader
